Description
METRODA 400MG contains Metronidazole, a highly effective antimicrobial agent classified as a Nitroimidazole. This medication is unique because it targets two distinct types of harmful organisms: anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoal parasites.
What it Contains & How it Works: Each tablet contains of Metronidazole. Metronidazole acts as a pro-drug; it is biologically inactive until it enters an anaerobic environment (like the cells of target bacteria or protozoa). Once inside, the drug is chemically reduced, producing highly reactive, toxic intermediate compounds (free radicals). These free radicals severely damage the organism’s and other essential proteins, quickly leading to cell death. Because it specifically relies on the reductive processes found in anaerobic organisms, it is selective in its action.
Primary Uses and Benefits: METRODA 400MG is indicated for the treatment of various infections where anaerobic organisms are the cause, including:
- Protozoal Infections: Such as Amebiasis (Entamoeba histolytica), Giardiasis, and Trichomoniasis.
- Anaerobic Bacterial Infections: Including infections of the gut, abdomen, pelvic area, skin, and dental infections, often used in combination therapy.
Potential Side Effects (Precautions): A critical warning for Metronidazole is its severe interaction with alcohol. Taking alcohol during treatment and for at least three days afterward can cause a disulfiram-like reaction (including flushing, severe nausea, vomiting, palpitations, and headache). Common side effects include nausea, a distinct metallic taste in the mouth, and headache. Rarely, it may cause neurological effects. METRODA 400MG is a prescription-only medication.
