Description
CEF-A GR is a sterile, lyophilized powder containing Cefotaxime, a potent, third-generation Cephalosporin antibiotic intended for parenteral (Intramuscular or Intravenous) administration. This formulation is reserved for treating serious bacterial infections where broad-spectrum, hospital-grade antibiotic coverage is essential.
What it Contains & How it Works: Each vial contains (Gram) of Cefotaxime (often as Cefotaxime Sodium). Cefotaxime is a bactericidal antibiotic, meaning it directly kills the infecting bacteria. It achieves this by disrupting the formation of the rigid bacterial cell wall. Specifically, it binds to and inactivates critical enzymes called Penicillin-Binding Proteins (PBPs), which halts the final step of peptidoglycan synthesis. This structural failure leads to the rupture and death of the bacterial cell. A key advantage of Cefotaxime is its high stability against many -lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria, making it effective against organisms resistant to older generation antibiotics.
Primary Uses and Benefits: CEF-A GR is indicated for the treatment of severe infections, particularly those acquired in a hospital setting or requiring prompt, aggressive therapy. Uses include:
- Meningitis: (Except when caused by Listeria monocytogenes).
- Septicemia/Sepsis: (Bloodstream infections).
- Severe Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: (e.g., pneumonia).
- Complicated Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs):
- Serious Skin and Soft Tissue Infections:
Potential Side Effects (Precautions): Common side effects include pain/inflammation at the injection site, and mild gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea or diarrhea. Serious risks include hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis, especially in patients with a history of penicillin allergy), and in rare cases, blood dyscrasias. CEF-A GR is a prescription-only medication and must be administered by trained healthcare personnel following proper reconstitution.
