Description
METRODA 500MG contains Metronidazole, a powerful, broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent belonging to the Nitroimidazole class. This high-dose formulation is often utilized for initial loading doses, treatment of severe infections, or for specific short courses against highly susceptible organisms. The drug is unique due to its ability to effectively target both anaerobic bacteria and several types of protozoal parasites.
What it Contains & How it Works: Each tablet contains of Metronidazole. Metronidazole functions as a pro-drug that only becomes active inside the target anaerobic microbes or parasites. Once reduced by these organisms, it creates toxic, highly reactive intermediate compounds (free radicals). These compounds efficiently break and damage the microbe’s and other cellular components, leading to swift and definitive cell death. This targeted activation makes it highly selective for anaerobic organisms, minimizing impact on aerobic gut flora.
Primary Uses and Benefits: The strength is commonly indicated for:
- Severe Anaerobic Infections: Including deep-seated abdominal, pelvic, bone, or joint infections.
- Protozoal Diseases: Effective against Amebiasis (Entamoeba histolytica), Giardiasis, and Trichomoniasis, often used in single-dose or short, intensive treatment regimens.
- Surgical Prophylaxis: Used before and after certain surgeries to prevent anaerobic post-operative infections.
Potential Side Effects (Precautions): A mandatory caution for Metronidazole is the severe interaction with alcohol (including products containing alcohol). Consumption must be strictly avoided during treatment and for a minimum of three days afterward to prevent a disabling disulfiram-like reaction (flushing, severe vomiting, rapid heart rate, etc.). Common side effects include nausea, a characteristic metallic taste in the mouth, and headache. Rarely, it can cause neurological symptoms. METRODA 500MG is a prescription-only medication.
